I’d worked for many years for a software vendor, and often found I was limited in how I could help a client. There are things you can’t say and ways you can’t advise when you’re representing a vendor. So after I took some time out to do a Masters I knew I wanted to leverage my experience and knowledge as a management consultant, able to help clients on many levels. I worked on my own as a consultant for a short while but hated it; I missed being part of a team. Morse Management Consulting has been the perfect home for me. It’s full of good people who are clever and generous and great fun—attributes which don’t often come in combination. The organisation is founded on a truly amazing culture of sharing knowledge. It’s been a real honour to be able to help consultants in different locations I’ve never even met when their clients need help in my area of expertise—and when I’ve asked a question, I’ve received more information and support than I could have imagined.
My client work has been challenging and incredibly rewarding. Sometimes I’ve felt a little over my head when asked to work in a new area, but it’s great to stretch a little and learn something new. Besides, organisational and process issues are the same all over, so you always have a way in to the client’s needs. I think the greatest gift we bring to clients is the ability to listen intelligently, apply some analysis with a little experience and expertise, and clarify for them what they often already know but haven’t been able to action. I do a lot of writing to create shared understanding and enable clients to make decisions. I’m constantly learning, and I love the variety and change.
