The challenge

Steelcase Malaysia needed to implement lean manufacturing methods. Maximising efficiency and improving information exchange between management and the shop floor would help control customer service levels and protect its position in the marketplace as it met aggressive growth targets. However existing enterprise applications would not support the required way of working.

The solution

In a nine-month project, Morse helped Steelcase deliver an SAP enterprise solution that enabled a simpler, more efficient business model. This was the first time a Steelcase company has used SAP to support lean manufacturing and Kanban methodologies. The project is a pilot that companies in Europe and the US, who are also implementing SAP manufacturing, will follow.

The benefits

Steelcase now has integrated production planning with its SAP solution managing the entire business from order entry to finance and warehouse management. By supporting lean manufacturing SAP has reduced manufacturing lead times by around 7 days. Improved visibility of the manufacturing process has led to value stream improvements and also means Steelcase can commit to customers with reliable delivery dates.
