Somerfield, a leading UK supermarket chain with over 1000 stores, wanted to improve the quality of its operational software applications, accelerate the pace of introducing new systems, and cut the cost of software development and application support.
Morse worked with Somerfield to design and implement a corporate software testing strategy. Morse initially operated a managed testing service for Somerfield, using its own testing specialists plus other resources as appropriate. During this time, Morse created and documented structured testing procedures in the form of a Test Director programme. Morse transferred software quality knowledge to Somerfield staff, and trained project managers in the use of Test Director. Internal staff now control software testing in-house, calling on specialists and consultancy support from Morse as required.
Somerfield now has structured procedures in place that ensure only the highest quality applications are deployed within its head office, stores and logistics operations. The company has been able to reduce IT costs by dispensing with its specialist testing team, and reducing significantly the resources and time devoted to software maintenance and support.
Efficient user acceptance testing has pushed back the cost of ensuring initial software quality onto vendors.
