Storage capabilities
Data Management
Data management looks at the current environment, and identifies what needs to change in terms of the environment, processes and procedures in order for clients to move up through the maturity model. This step is primarily a services-based offering, and involves utilising the client's current infrastructure to maximise its use and value. During this phase Morse also identifies how the environment needs to change to accommodate the client’s future needs.
Storage optimisation
This involves identifying what the needs of the business are, and therefore which parts of the storage environment need to change in order to accommodate these needs. Once we have identified the client's future needs, we can begin to change and optimise their environment to allow them to move further up the maturity model. Storage optimisation enables the transition from the management of data to information, examining how to make more effective use of the current storage environment.
Storage provisioning
This stage builds on the previous optimisation stage, by implementing the tools the client needs to remain in true control of their environment. It also allows the IT department to identify problems before they become an issue and to see who or which parts of the business use more resources than they should.
This provides the IT department with the data needed to build a business case for implementing a charge back scheme in line with current/future budgeting, and to be able to prove usage of resources. Consequently, storage will become much more of a user driven tool, rather than the domain of the IT department, allowing business to become more flexible and agile in responding to markets needs and placing storage decision making in the hands of users.
