Retire and Redeploy

Morse believes the most successful way to manage technology investments, from initial purchase through to decommissioning, is with effective and sustainable Technology Lifecycle Management (TLM).

This flexible framework incorporates three stages - Design, Sourcing and Implementing; Optimising & Managing; and Retire and Redeploy.

The retire and redeploy stage of the lifecycle is concerned with developing a strategy for what to do with ageing, underperforming or unused devices. Uncovering these assets can happen when a project drives a review of the current lifecycle stage of existing devices. For example, at a time when there is:

  • A reduction in performance levels
  • A technology refresh project triggering a need for more space
  • Pressure to reduce carbon footprint and energy use
  • A consolidation exercise to fulfil a cost cutting initiative
  • A relocation of a data centre
  • Acquisition or selling off companies or divisions
  • An introduction of a new major application

During the process, businesses will benefit from building an asset register, an essential tool to help identify and categorise surplus, energy-hungry machines. The asset register can then be used to develop a total cost of ownership (TCO) model and, in turn, to develop a strategy about which devices to decommission, which to redeploy to extend their life as much as possible, and which to retire – all to maximise the return from each device whilst remaining in line with the company’s own policies and with legislation.

However knowing where to begin the process can be a challenge. Morse’s tried and tested Asset Retirement Programme which complies with the WEEE directive and the Data Protection Act has been designed to help organisations simplify the whole process of managing the latter stage of the technology lifecycle.
